The Girls Are Talkin'
Daaaaaayuuuuum.
Saturday night was A.W.E.S.O.M.E. as Gregg Gillis' DJ-persona Girl Talk took to the stage at Richard's on Richards just before midnight and just after Norweigan band Datarock exited their set with playing "Time Of My Life" from Dirty Dancing. Was the playing of that track odd? Yes. But was it pretty sweet? Heck yeah! I love that movie.
Gillis (who looks strikingly similar to my buddy Kyle M.) has more energy than a Ritalin-addled kid jacked up on slurpees and five cent candies from the local 7-11. His live show got the crowd jumping harder than House of Pain, sweating more than a fat lady on a diet at Sprinkles or Magnolia and spitting out lyrics faster than Bone Thugs 'N' Harmony. If that guy wasn't on anything, then he's got some amazing natural high -- Gillis already stripped down to his boxer shorts and white high-top sneaks, soaked in sweat, head-banging like crazy and crowd-surfing even before the halfway mark of his set.
The crowd was a whole lot hipster, which was kind of nice -- my friends and I probably represented the entire Yaletown/Kits set that made it out (that I knew of), making a total of about twenty of us. If you love music and dancing, you need to make seeing a Girl Talk show one of the top things to do before you die. Seriously.
And besides the venue turning into a sauna from the excess sweat and body heat of a 500+ crowd, I definitely had the time of my life.
I'm Lovin' it: This art installation of New York's skyline -- entitled "Save Manhattan" and made entirely of speakers -- by Mounir Fatmi for the recently opened Venice Biennale, which is in its 52nd year. Fatmi, at the core, is an existential artist with strong political views. But aren't they all??
I'm Over it: The thought of having to put together my new, gorgeous black-brown wood dresser. It'll probably require Mikey's trusty powerdrill and a thorough read of technical instructions. Bah humbug.
Photographer of the Day: John Michael Cooper, who did these beautiful, eery and creepy photographs of bride models in death induced-looking poses for a recent New York Times article on wedding dresses. A quick peruse on his website shows a range of photographic themes, some sweet and some macabre, but nonetheless stunning.

That speaker-skyline rocks my ass so hard I'll feel it shaking in bed tonight.
