A Dash Of Paprika Will Do Ya

On Saturday night -- instead of dropping money on vodka sodas at nearby downtown lounges -- my crew decided to take it easier than usual.

After a scrumptious dinner at a little Indian-Chinese fusion restaurant called Green Lettuce (whose awning happens to be yellow, go figure) on Kingsway & Victoria, we wandered over to Tinseltown Theatres to view the newest Japanese anime Paprika, a science fiction cartoon based on Yasutaka Tsutsui's novel of the same name.

It debuted at the 63td Annual Venice International Film Festival to amazing accolades for its cinematographic beauty, twisted plot and dark undertones. Basically, if you have a fear of dolls (scientifically known as "pediophobia" and of which I may have suffered from slightly as a little girl, thanks to a particularly creepy one that hung on the top shelf facing my bed), do not see this film. There are a lot of them.

However, the soundtrack is just amazing and a must-buy for me. If you love electronica in the form of Gui Boratto or Studio, then you'll also need this one in your vinyl collection.

You probably expect me to say that post-movie, we all did end up going for drinks.

Well, the thought did cross our minds briefly, but instead we called it a night and watched Molly Shannon host SNL instead.
